Polyethylene (PE) is one of the most common and versatile polymers used in a wide range of applications. This plastic material is produced through the polymerization of ethylene, a process that can be carried out under various conditions to produce polyethylene with different physical and mechanical properties.
Polyethylene can be classified based on density and structure. The main categories of polyethylene are:
LDPE is a branched-chain polymer, obtained through the polymerization of ethylene under high pressures. It is flexible and has low tensile strength. Used for plastic films, bags, electric cable coatings.
MDPE has intermediate density and rigidity between LDPE and HDPE. It is used for gas pipes, garbage bags, caps.
HDPE is stiffer and stronger than LDPE due to its less branched and more linear structure. It is used for liquid containers, pipes, toys, bottle caps.
Similar to LDPE but with higher tensile strength and puncture resistance. Used in stretch films and packaging.
